6th St. btw Ave. A and B

Gay bar that’s off the beaten path, but by no means less crowded than any other, and also by no means less of a hook up place than any other bar.  Definitely more of a dive feel, but a clean dive.  Besides Pac Man in the corner, it’s basically a small open room with some bar stools that let me know I was a “butch bitch” and my friend a “cum pig”…can I write that?  Anywho, average and above average beers at average prices.

Compared to the other bars, or really any other establishment on 9th, this would be the “dive” of the lot.  An old school bar with a good amount of space, good music, and, wait for it, it’s a gay bar.  I admit, I was fooled and thought it was just another hole in the wall. And while it is, it’s an all-male bar, hags in tow, and a decent place to grab a drink..actually, I really liked this place.  Everyone was in a good mood, and very friendly to anyone who wandered in.  Friendly bartenders, average prices for average tasting beers.

This place was not too bad.  Sure I wouldn’t meet anyone that I could date in here, but it was a lot of fun to hang out.  There’s a lot of space upstairs, but this floor gets crowded, so thankfully there is more space downstairs at the quieter bar.  And it’s one of two places with sports on TV in the neighborhood.  Good music, average drinks at average prices.

If you’re not older than 45, or a gay male, or the token old lady near the front (think John Waters or Mr. Blackwell), this place is not very welcoming.  I went in with a friend, and it has all the makings of a nice neighborhood bar, with some TV, places to sit, big bar, and a really friendly bartender.  But if you’re not one of the previously mentioned crowds, you’re stared at until you quietly leave.  Beers taste average, above average pints at average prices.

I feel like this place would belong more down Route 109 in backwoods Pennsylvania.  This place is small, some dancing entertainment (I finally get the term banana hammock), the crowd is old and young men,  and the place could use an airing out.  Beers were cheap and tasted average, good music.

Stonewall Inn, where it all began…oh if they could see it now.  It’s mostly a tourist destination, filled with the LGBT community, college students, and the aforementioned tourists who just want to see a slice of history.  The bartender was probably around back in the 70’s, and he moves as is in his 70’s.  There’s a decent amount of space, two floors, good two for one special for happy hours, drinks taste average (all bottles) and are average prices at normal times.

Even though it didn’t “rain glitter”, as a friend promised, the place was still packed and dancing.  Don’t be fooled by the huge crowd/line outside, there’s plenty of room inside.  Several floors of booze and boys, it can sometimes feel like one big apartment party.  Beers are average prices, taste fine, the crowd is mostly LGBT, all crowds are welcome.

Normally my friend’s will say “let’s hit up a gay bar”, and I envision dance floor and over-the-top everything.  This is one of the few “gay bars” in the city that is actually just a bar that happens to be gay, meaning it looks like every other bar in the city, pool table and all.  Sure there is a jukebox battle between Robyn and Evanescence going on, but I liked it here.  The bartenders are a tiny bit overwhelmed by the big crowd, but are very polite when they get to you.  Average beers at average prices, including Rolling Rock on tap!

Nice bar where the crowd isn’t necessarily there to pick up people, but to just hang out with your friends.  It also happens to be all male so, besides…no, including hags, there are no pickins for us muggles.  A decent amount of space, pretty good tasting taps, average prices, and bathrooms that, though they have outdated pictures, can still make you feel less than average.

I guess Hell’s kitchen is becoming a new Chelsea, but in a more blend-in kind of way, this bar being an example.  Among the restaurants on this street is this two story gay bar/lounge that is always crowded, at least both times I’ve been there.  The drinks are actually average prices and taste good too.  The crowd is, well, for the boys, and I don’t feel as if I’m going to be pounced on in the second I walk in the door…maybe I’m losing my sex appeal.

As of now, the only gay bar I’ve been to in this area.  This place is actually pretty laid back.  I mean, they show reruns of Buffy and not sports, the drinks are average prices and the beer tastes good.  The real draw here was Monday Night Drag Queen Bingo.  I won $50 twice and got to use my “I’m from Queens…but not that kind” joke.

My friend insists it gets crazy in here but I definitely caught in on a quieter night.  Rated by my friend as one of the better gay bars in the city, it definitely has a more upbeat/cozier feeling than most other places, gay or straight.  A bonus was that they had Rolling Rock on tap, and it actually tasted good, two for one happy hour specials, average prices the other times.

If you’re asked to go out with your gay friends for the night, expect to possibly be dragged here, have a relatively fun night, and then never see them again in the bar for the rest of the night.  The bartender was very good at realizing that I was straight but was nice enough to comp me most of the night.  If you stay upstairs, it’s a dance floor with some fun live performances.  Downstairs, well…if you’re going to bathroom, make a left at every guy making out and then zip back upstairs as fast as possible.  The drinks aren’t too overpriced but do taste good.

In this neighborhood, you’re more than likely to get a gay bar, but this one is gay, pure and simple.  Tacky atmosphere, disco ball, you name it.  I like this bar because I eventually went home with one of the hottest girls I’ve ever been with (trust me, I double checked to make sure I wasn’t getting stiffed…pun intended).  The drinks were average prices, they tasted fine, singing was happening with or without the karaoke.
